Cracking the “Who You Are” Code

Do you know who you are? How does knowing the origin or nationality of your DNA through ancestry websites help you know who you are? Discovering your ancestry became a $1 billion industry in 2017. It’s clear that people are trying to figure out who they are, however, are they secretly being distracted from finding their true identity from God?

Finding Yourself in the World

The world’s messages constantly tell you that you must find yourself. It encourages you to be independent; to explore any and all desires without considering the consequences to yourself or others; and to define yourself and your value through fame, fortune, power, and material possessions. Subconsciously you also define your identity from the positive and negative messages you have heard and through your life experiences.

The world deceives you into believing who you are comes from your messages, experiences, feelings, failures, and accomplishments. The danger of believing the world’s definition of who you are sets you up to continually strive to fix yourself, or to escape the pain of what you are not. No matter what you do, you never seem to measure up because the world’s identity for you always changes. The world and the enemy want to keep you striving to find and to improve who you are, instead of seeking God’s truth and to live in who you are.

Know Who You are in God’s Truth

God created you with a desire to discover who you are to keep you searching for his truth. His greatest desire is for you to choose to follow him and to live as His child in His abundance right now and forever.

When you stay focused on trying to define yourself through the world’s methods or other imperfect human’s standards, you’re blind to seeing how God made you. To truly know who you are, you must know WHO created you, how He created you, and why He created you.

All life begins from and through God. Your origin began with the very hands of God. You were created out of the love of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in their likeness. King David revealed the details of how God makes us in the book of Psalms.

For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be. Psalms 139:13 – 16 NIV.

Freedom to Choose

Although God created everyone from His love, He gives us the freedom to choose to believe He is the origin of our identity or to believe the hundreds of guesses of our origin created by imperfect men. Who you believe that you are, and how you live out your life, will follow WHO you believe is the origin of your creation and whom you serve.

If you believe you were created by imperfect parents or you evolved from clams, how can you ever be at peace or improve who you believe you are? When you choose to be a Christian, you are a new creation in Christ. “You have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 NIV

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! Two Corinthians 5:17 NLT

Salvation Made You New

At your salvation, you became a child of God and you were adopted into his family. As Christ lives in you, who you are comes from who Christ is living in you. As Christ lives in you, you receive ALL of his love in the following promises, blessings, and power in your new identity revealed in the following verses.

  • I am the righteousness of God—I have right standing with Him—in Jesus Christ 2 Corinthians 5:21.
  • I am chosen by God, forgiven and justified through Christ. I have a compassionate heart, kindness, humility, meekness and patience Romans 8:33; Colossians 3:12.
  • I am redeemed—forgiven of all my sins and made clean—through the blood of Christ Ephesians 1:7.
  • I am chosen by God who called me out of the darkness of sin and into the light and life of Christ so I can proclaim the excellence and greatness of who He is 1 Peter 2:9.
  • I am born again—spiritually transformed, renewed and set apart for God’s purpose—through the living and everlasting word of God 1 Peter 1:23.
  • I have been rescued from the domain and the power of darkness and brought into God’s kingdom Colossians 1:13.
  • I press on each day to fulfill God’s plan for my life because I live to please Him Philippians 3:14.
  • I am not ruled by fear because the Holy Spirit lives in me and gives me His power, love and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7.
  • I am greatly loved by God John 3:16
  • I am strengthened with all power according to His glorious might Colossians 1:11.

As a child of God, this is who you are now! As you develop a personal and progressive relationship with Jesus, through prayer, praise, studying God’s word and speaking it in your life; you will live like you believe who God’s says you are.

When you believe your identity originates or it is determined by imperfect people (including yourself), you will constantly feel a need to prove yourself, fix yourself, or punish yourself.

Your identity doesn’t come from what you do or don’t do. It doesn’t come from what you are, or what you are not in the world’s eyes. Your identity comes from God, your Creator. The question is, will you choose to follow Jesus and live in who he says you are, or will you choose to believe the enemies lies?

Live in Your New Christ-Identity

God saved you for hundreds of years to be born at just the right time to complete your role in His master plan. No matter what you have believed about your identity or what others may have told you in the past, your identity originates from God. You are not a mistake, an afterthought, or the planned child of your parents. You are God’s personally created child and His divine design for this appointed time in His grand plan!
