What Do Your Daydreams Reveal?

Are you conscious of the thoughts, images, hopes, and fantasies you are allowing to saunter into your mind through your daydreams? Are your daydreams full of possibilities or negative emotions? Are your daydreams good or bad for you?
 
Eric Klinger, professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota says, ‘We think of daydreams as scatterbrained and unfocused, but one of the functions of daydreaming is to keep your life’s agenda in front of you; it reminds you of what’s coming up, it rehearses new situations, plans the future and scans past experiences so you can learn from them.They tend to confirm what people already know about themselves, rather than providing new information. But you need to pay attention to them; daydreaming is a valuable self-to-self channel of communication. Although the content of daydreams varies hugely, two common themes are the ‘conquering hero’ and the ‘suffering martyr’. The conquering hero reflects a need to be in control and to rise above life’s frustrations. The suffering martyr is trying to deal with feelings of being unappreciated and misunderstood.
 
A third common daydream is to escape. ‘Escapist daydreaming occurs at times of stress, frustration or boredom, when we feel thwarted in the real world, and so remove ourselves to another, idealized, situation,’ says Cliff Arnall, a psychologist who runs the No Pills practice in Wales.
 
Daydreams are a series of thoughts and images passing through your mind while you are awake. If your daydreams remind you of what you know about yourself, do they remind you that you are a beloved, cherished child of the living God or do you replay all your past mistakes? Some of you may be thinking this is no big deal, “it’s just a daydream,” but when you look at the life of Christ Jesus, he demonstrated how important his thoughts were to living a triumphant life. If Jesus understood the importance of his thoughts and he chose to align them with God’s while he lived on the earth to overcome the enemy, then anyone who wants to overcome the enemy should follow Christ’s example.
 
Every believer has the opportunity and responsibility to partner with Christ by diligently seeking Him. As your intimate relationship grows by studying God’s word, praying, and obeying His ways, your heart and mind will slowly become transformed into His likeness. In the mind of Christ, your daydreams will remind you that you are God’s child and in His hands now and forever. You will see your present and future through God’s love, hope, and grace while leaving the past in the past. He will help you combat temptations, feeling afraid, lonely, unappreciated, undervalued, hopeless, and helpless. Jesus will empower you to triumph over your desire to escape your life by creating a fantasy life or escape through alcohol, drugs, sex, food, or other destructive behaviors. In time your daydreams will confirm that you are forgiven and redeemed.
 
To help you succeed, God instructed His apostle Paul to share His wisdom with anyone who is willing to listen.“Take captive every thought and make it obedient unto Christ,” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV. God continued to share more wisdom with us through Paul and Timothy in Philippians 4:8-10 NIV. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” When you make God the center of your heart and thoughts, as Jesus did, your daydreams will naturally gravitate to mirror His heart and character and fulfill His best plans for you. You will feel the freedom and power to create extraordinary dreams and plans that only God can help you achieve.
 
This week I challenge you to write down the contents of your daydreams. At the end of the week review your daydreams. What are you confirming about yourself to yourself? What are you confirming to yourself about your relationship with Jesus Christ? Do your future dreams and plans honor God, others, and yourself? What can you ask Jesus to help you work on to live as an overcomer as He did? Remember, your personal relationship and faith maturity with Jesus is a process. Keep faithful, because God is faithful and daydream big!
