What Does it Mean to Know Jesus?

I love to see toddlers when they are just starting to walk and run. You see their excitement, frustration, and joy when they have figured out how to control their legs. Once they synchronize their nerves with their thoughts through practice, the process of learning how to walk becomes knowing. Now they know they can walk and run automatically by choice.

Learning to Live in Your Spirit

This same learning and practicing principle is true for your spirit when you ask Jesus to be your Savior. Just as Jesus had God living in and flowing through him, we have Jesus living in and flowing through us. Christ in us is much like our nerves that go throughout our entire body. We have to be willing to live in sync with Jesus and let his love work through us. But those who do what Christ tells them to will learn to love God more and more. That is the way to know whether or not you are a Christian. Anyone who says he is a Christian should live as Christ did. 1 John 2:5-6 TLB

The spiritual process of discovery or revelation is brought about by the Holy Spirit as we trust and allow Christ to dwell within us. If this is the first time you’re hearing this truth, you are not alone. We all grow and live in our faith in Jesus Christ in various ways and through our specific lessons. Some of us stay in the infant stage, others move to the young adult stage, and others of us get to the place of knowing, “Christ is our life.”

Hearing, Believing, or Knowing

Although I believed and followed God from an early age, it took me years to move from:

  • Hearing I was God’s child and he forgave me, to . . .
  • Believing He loved me, and I would spend eternity with him, to . . .
  • Knowing, through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, that my salvation means my old sin-self was crucified on the cross with I was given a new spirit when Jesus came to life. Knowing and trusting my spirit is united with Jesus 24 hours a day makes me willing and excited to let him flow through me.

My revelation of knowing and trusting Jesus lives in me frees me to stop focusing on how I will live my day; to how Jesus and I, will live our day. I know my union with Christ isn’t some thought I choose to believe or proclaim, it is now my spiritual DNA. Once you KNOW there is no separation from Jesus; Christ becomes the point of origin for all your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Your motive in and through Christ is to come from his pure love.

Trusting Christ Doesn’t Make You a Robot

I’m not saying I’m a robot, or nothing bad will happen in my life, or I won’t choose to do things on my own and sin. What I’m saying is that when you know and trust Jesus is living inside you, and he’s operating through you, you are empowered to avoid the temptation to step away from him and do things on your own. Jesus will never force his way on you even though he is united to your spirit. Unless you are willing to let Christ live through you, you will be the biggest obstacle in your way to living in his joy, peace, and power.

You Can Know How to Live in Christ

We will each discover, grow, and mature in our faith in Christ at different times and intensities. No matter where you are at, I encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to bring you the revelation of knowing Jesus in a progressive and intimate relationship.

Jesus said he came to give you abundant life, now it up to you to let him live inside you and operate through you. Partnering with Jesus will slowly transform you into his likeness here on earth. You will be the light and salt he calls you to be and others will say, “I want what you have.”
