Family comes to mind as the day’s countdown to Christmas. The warmhearted movies and post cards etch a wonderful loving family scene into our hearts. I would venture to say these perfect images rarely if ever meet with our realities especially as we experience more years and the changes they bring.
Many of you have family to share the holidays with but some of you are alone. In fact this can be a very hard time for those who feel rejected or isolated. What can you do when your immediate family is shrinking? What can you do when you come from a splintered and toxic dysfunctional family that requires you to draw a boundary to stay away so you can remain healthy?
One of the greatest gifts God the Father and Jesus ever gave us happened when Jesus died and rose again and made a way for ALL who believe in Him to be His children and join His ginormous family.
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12-13 (NIV)
Being a child of God can be a hard concept to receive and believe for those who have felt alone in this world. All God’s children are called to love nonbelievers as well as believers and show them God’s love and grace. We are called to follow the example of Jesus which is to love one another as treasured family members.
I am challenging all the children of God who find themselves alone to look around and see who you can invite into our Christmas day to let them know the love available to them from you, a loving member of God’s family. Accept them where they are and let them see what a personal relationship with Christ is all about. Show them the true meaning of our Messiah, our Savior, and the hope and love He made available to ALL who believe. In your willingness to love you will be loved.
