Who You Are is Not What You Do

“I’m a mom, a wife, a receptionist, a manager.” These are a few of the answers I hear from women when I ask them, who are you? All of these answers are the roles, jobs, and responsibilities they live in. However, what they do is not who they are when they are disciples of Christ.

Salvation Changes Our Spirit

The instant we ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior, he breathes life into our spirit, and he makes us a new creation. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (Cor 5:17 NIV) Our body and soul, which is our mind, will, and emotions, as well as some learned habits and behaviors, are not instantly changed. But in our spirit, we are new.

We have the privilege to live in the fullness and abundance of Jesus. We are no longer a slave to our old thoughts, emotions, or the power of sin when we choose to walk hand in hand with Jesus. When Jesus comes to live in us as we live in him, he transforms who we are in his eyes and Gods through our spirit.

We Are Responsible to Discover Our Christ Identity

People are like computers; we can only do what we know. Although salvation is a FREE gift from God through Christ’s sacrifice, we must know how to take care of this gift and how to help it flourish. Our faith is founded on believing, trusting, knowing God’s word and power, and living it out in our words and actions as we walk with Jesus. “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (Jam 2:17 NIV)

Our faith is active, and it is meant to grow throughout our lifetime in a close personal relationship with Jesus. Once we accepted salvation, we became a disciple of Christ in name and spirit. However, to truly be a disciple, we are responsible for walking with him and learning to live in his heart, character, and ways. As we build a deep personal relationship with our teacher and Savior, he helps us discover who we are in Christ. When we learn who we are in Christ and walk hand in hand with him, he transforms our mind, heart, and life into our true God created Christ identity.

Living in Truth Requires Changing What We Know

To find our original created identity, we must find the truth in God’s word. We must know the origin of our identity. Who made us? How we are made, and why?

Most of us grow up with a variety of stories about where we came from. Some of us were taught that God created Adam and Eve, but we are not taught that God knit you together in your mother’s womb, . . . all the days ordained for you were written in His book of life before one of them came to be.” (Ps 139:13,16 NIV)

Your Creator and loving Father, God, chose and created every aspect of you from his love. He gave you the power to choose to discover, love, and live in who you are in Christ or to believe what the world says and live for yourself. Unless you learn God’s truth about you and believe it deep in your heart and spirit, you will continue to live in your old stinking thinking of the world that you are what you do. To be transformed into the likeness of Christ, you must let him teach you and transform you so you can thrive in your Christ identity.
